How to rejuvenate an old oleander by pruning?

Why rejuvenate an old oleander?

With age, oleanders may weaken and produce fewer flowers. Before uprooting it and throwing it away, try to rejuvenate it with a special pruning. It can also be rejuvenated if the oleander is too large.

Your oleander is too damaged because of winter? Or does it clutter your exterior because of its imposing size? And if you rejuvenated it by the size?

Oleander is prized for its pretty pink flowers and elongated foliage. Easy to maintain, it can however prove to be weakened because of too harsh a winter or its cumbersome size. For this, we advise to rejuvenate it by a particularly severe pruning. Here are the steps to follow.

Rejuvenating an old oleander: the steps

First, carry out rejuvenation pruning at the end of frosts. Generally, this takes place in early  spring, but late frosts can still point their noses. Cut back tired branches and dead wood to ground level. Remove 2/3 of the branches, keeping 40 cm on three frames. Take this opportunity to clean the oleander so it can enjoy the sunlight. You will be able to enjoy the flowers of your rejuvenated oleander after about two years.

To rejuvenate an old oleander, you will have to arm yourself with the right tools :

  • pruning shears : to cut dead branches and clean the oleander;
  • A pruner : this force pruner allows you to cut the most robust stems;
