Why mulch? Mulching has many beneficial effects for plants. It has an umbrella effect so it prevents rainwater from compacting the soil. It also has a parasol effect : it prevents water from evaporating. In addition, mulch provides food for microorganisms.
There are many mulches. We can cite a few: garden pruning waste, fine wood or coconut fiber. Prefer dark colored mulch, like earth, much more aesthetic!
The good gesture : scatter 5 to 10 cm thick mulch around the plants. There is no need to dig or hoe the soil!
How to create your own mulch?
It is easy to make mulch with garden waste. Dead leaves that fall to the ground in the fall can be picked up and turned into natural mulch. Just like mowing the lawn , let it dry in direct sunlight before using it as protection for your plants. However, grasses treated with weed killer are not recommended for mulch. After pruning your shrubs, you can collect the small branches and grind them to make quality mulch.
